Dark Skies

U.S. GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR PRESERVING DARK SKIES
The 11-year-old International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) received a major financial boost April 27th in the form of a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The IDA announced the windfall at its annual meeting in Tucson, Arizona. The organization had only collected dues and donations from members, individuals and companies from all 50 states and 70 countries. The money will be used to build a solid financial foundation for the organization so it can further expand membership and develop additional programs to bring awareness of the
environmental, aesthetic, safety, and financial impact of wasteful lighting. The IDA’s primary goal of preserving dark skies for both professional and amateur astronomers.
